The Department of Public Safety/Campus Police at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) invites applications for an Institution Security Officer III.  This is an unarmed position, Officer will patrol the campus buildings, grounds, and areas adjacent to the College, enforcing MCLA rules and regulations.  This Officer ensures the safety, security and well-being of the College community through: Patrolling an assigned area; make periodic rounds and security checks of buildings and grounds; take steps to remedy or control emergency situations; prepare and review a variety of information-gathering forms and reports; inspect firefighting and other safety apparatus; provide direction and general information to the public; and perform related work as required.

  • At least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in work involving the protection or security of buildings, equipment or people as the major duty.
    • Substitutions:
      • An Associate's degree in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice or a Bachelor's in any discipline, may be substituted for the required experience. Education toward such a degree(s) will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
  • Must be able to pass the following pre-employment examinations: fit-for-duty physical and psychological assessments under the auspices of the Campus Police Department, as well as a thorough background check to include Criminal Offender Records Information
  • Must have a criminal history free of ANY felony convictions
  • Must have and retain a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to stand and or walk for prolonged periods of time; while wearing issued and approved equipment (protective body armor etc.).
  • Ability to lift heavy objects or persons and possess physical stamina and endurance
  • Must be able to work with diverse populations and have the ability to interact with young adults, faculty, and staff in a multicultural, multiracial environment
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to obtain a CPR/First Responder certification and training in the operation of Automated External Defibrillators
  • Ability to successfully complete periodic training
  • Computer literacy in law enforcement technology preferred, including: word processing, LEAPS, ID equipment, various alarm systems/computers, and other security-related software
  • Must be able to work with dispatch and act as a dispatcher in the absence of one, as assigned
  • Ability to obtain certification as a Law Enforcement Administration System Computer Operator
  • Ability to complete Incident Command System training
  • A basic knowledge and understanding of police procedures and how those procedures are adapted to an educational community, preferred
  • Ability to work varied work schedules and shifts based on assignment and the needs of the Department/College, to include overtime
  • Must successfully complete the required Field Orientation Program


Additional Information:

The shifts for these position(s) are Wednesday-Sunday Midnight-8am with Monday and Tuesday off, OR; Thursday-Monday 4pm-Midnight with Tuesday and Wednesday off. This shift(s) may be subject to change.

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, (Grade 13, Step 1) position in the AFSCME bargaining unit.  Biweekly salary is $1,667.36.
