Williams College is pleased to announce an opening for a part-time (30 hours per week) Advanced Microscopy Specialist. This position provides essential technical support by overseeing the Oberndorf Family Microscopy Suite. The Advanced Microscopy Specialist assists or trains users with a variety of microscopy instruments and associated techniques including: scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, confocal laser scanning microscope, atomic force microscope and various light microscopes. These activities play an important role in both teaching and research efforts across the sciences and with other collaborators, for example in the arts. This position ensures access for the college community to advanced instrumentation for teaching/research and oversees the safe and efficient use of the microscopy lab. Qualifications:

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience with electron microscopy including sample preparation and data processing/analysis
  • Experience with confocal laser scanning microscopy including sample preparation and data processing/analysis
  • Experience with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practice, including safe use of hazardous chemicals


This position requires independent work and the ability to manage priorities and deadlines for multiple projects. The ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others is essential, including faculty members, students, and outside vendors. It also requires the mobility to stand or sit at a lab bench for extended periods of time and visual acuity for color differentiation, depth perception and peripheral vision.

Application review will begin on June 26, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled. Pay range is $26-$29 per hour, commensurate with experience. This 30 h/week, year-round position is eligible for Williams College's robust benefits package designed to support you in your work and overall health and wellness.

This is a fully in-person position, and remote work arrangements will not be available at this time.
