The Williams College Campus Safety & Security (CSS), Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Department is pleased to announce an immediate opportunity for a EH&S Safety Assistant.

Reporting to the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator, This primary purpose of this position is to assure compliance with fire safety equipment and to support the operations of EH&S. The Mission of the Williams College Campus Safety Services Department is to enhance the quality of life at Williams by providing a safe and secure environment that is conducive to learning, and is consistent with the educational goals of this diverse institution, while building community partnerships that foster trust, mutual respect, and cooperation.

Responsibilities:

Conduct monthly testing, required follow-up, repairs or replacement, and documentation of required fire safety equipment and support operations of EH&S, including:
  • Monthly fire extinguishers, fire escapes, building common areas, and fire doors inspections.
  • Monthly emergency lights and exit signs testing.
  • Follow-up, repair, replacement, and reporting of all inspected and tested equipment.
  • Annual inventory and replacement of expired fire extinguishers.
  • Assist with:
    • campus safety training,
    • new/updated fire alarm testing,
    • semi annual fire drills and smoke demonstrations,
    • life safety workplace training,
    • life safety inspections of faculty turnovers,
    • yearly maintenance of all fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and CO detectors in faculty rentals, and
    • confiscation of unauthorized items.
  • Clean-up/containment of hazmat spills and leaks.
  • Installation of building Certificate of Inspections issued by the Town of Williamstown.
  • Participation in rotating On Call duties.

Manage efforts to evaluate, respond to, and mitigate environmental risks to provide a safe and healthy work environment, including:
  • Assisting with all aspects of EH&S as required based on current operations.
  • Responding to clean-up of hazardous materials or waste.
  • Assisting the Emergency Management Director as required for incidents on campus.
  • Interacting with a diverse group of people including faculty, staff, students, and outside agencies.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Between 1 and 2 years of relevant safety or related experience
  • Must complete the following training upon being hired:
    • HAZWOPER,
    • NFPA 80 Certification,
    • OSHA 10,
    • RRP Supervisor certification,
    • Deleading supervisors' certificate,
    • Hot Works certification,
    • Knowledge of the fire and safety field, and
    • CPR/AED, First-Aid, and Stop the Bleed.

Application review will begin on December 4, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Pay range is from $23 to $26 per hour, commensurate with experience.
