Williams College seeks an Assistant Director for Intergroup Relations and Inclusive Programming of the Davis Center.  Named for scholar-activists W. Allison Davis ’24 and John A. Davis ’33 and part of the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Center catalyzes broad campus engagement with complex issues of identity as they affect intellectual, creative, and social life. Collaborating with all sectors of the college community—students, staff, faculty, academic departments and programs, and alumni—and with off-campus partners, the Davis Center initiates and supports a rich variety of programs that seek to foster dialogue about access, equity, and inclusion at Williams and elsewhere.  Its work is central to the core academic and institutional values of the college that center and prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion.  To learn more about the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion visit  To learn more about the Davis Center visit

Reporting to the Director of The Davis Center, the Assistant Director will mentor, train, support, and advise students and student leaders across campus, including those in Minority Coalition groups. The assistant director will also curate workshops and other educational programming designed to foster inter- and intragroup dialogue and social identity related knowledge between and among students, student groups, faculty, staff, and the entire college community.  The Assistant Director will have deep knowledge of and experience working with constituents around issues of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, socioeconomic status, nationality, and first-generation status. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will have experience with and excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse.  They will have demonstrated success in working with historically underrepresented or underserved groups and an understanding of explicit and implicit bias and associated power dynamics.  They will collaborate with others and be able to work with many different individuals, offices, and academic units on campus.  In a cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the College’s commitment to fostering a fully inclusive community, as well as their relevant work experience. A master’s degree in a related field is preferred; candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of related professional experience.  

The Assistant Director’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing workshops and conversation models that encourage self-reflection, respect, and conflict resolution, using a restorative framework;
  • Training and mentoring student Community Engagement Fellows;
  • Mentoring and advising student affinity groups and supporting their efforts to develop inclusive programming focused on issues of identity;
  • Helping students and student groups navigate challenging moments and situations;
  • Fostering educational opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage in discourse around issues of sexuality, gender, race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, nationality, religion and/or spirituality and other identity factors;
  • Promoting effective and respectful dialogue and opening lines of communication between students and faculty and staff on campus, especially on issues of diversity, inclusion and equity;  
  • Practicing and modeling excellent interpersonal skills and methods for productive dialogue and discourse;
  • Facilitate campus conversations focused on issues of diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Working with student-facing departments to support positive student experiences (e.g., Integrative Wellbeing Services, Academic Resources, Chaplain’s Office, Dean of the College’s Office, Office of Student Life);
  • Building partnerships across the campus and throughout the surrounding communities to further positive intergroup relations.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Experience with web based content management systems.

This position is a full-time, year-round appointment. Some evening, night, and weekend hours are required.  The expectation is that the individual hired will carry out the majority of work in-person; however, alternative working arrangements consistent with College policy may be possible.
