Opening Details

The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) is pleased to announce an opening for a 20-hour/week Visitor Services Associate. The Visitor Service Associate is part of the "front of house" team, stationed at the host/information desk and in the galleries. The Visitor Services Associate welcomes and orients visitors, keeps art and visitors safe, gives information about exhibitions and programs, answers questions, records visitor data, rings up gift shop sales, and directs inquiries. The Visitor Services Associate also serves as host in the lounge, setting up and tidying up the space.

WCMA makes dynamic art experiences to incite new thinking about art, museums, and the world. Established in 1926, WCMA is located in Lawrence Hall, a four-story historic building on the college campus. The museum's collection consists of more than 14,000 works of art. A vibrant cultural center, WCMA serves as a learning museum for both Williams students, and the community as a whole.

This is a part-time, permanent position with benefits. The 20-hour schedule will be Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9:45 am to 5:15 pm with additional days as needed. WCMA is open 10am to 5pm, closed Mondays.

Responsibilities
  • Be a knowledgeable, friendly and watchful presence welcoming students and visitors, including families and school/groups, and keeping art and visitors safe.
  • Assist students and visitors with information about the exhibits or wayfinding, respond to questions and comments.
  • Keep informed of exhibitions and programs at WCMA
  • Record visitor attendance and additional data as requested
  • Oversee the WCMA lounge, set up and tidy up tables and chairs, help serve and clear refreshments as needed.
  • Assist WCMA Security Officers during special events and public programs
  • Know and follow guidelines for alarms or emergencies.
  • Be knowledgeable in the layout of the museum; including location of galleries, elevator, main staircase, public restrooms and emergency exit locations.
  • Take part in training sessions as scheduled.
  • Be available to cover for co-workers if an absence occurs.
  • Provide feedback to each other and museum colleagues regarding visitor needs, preferences, inquiries, and other information.
  • Be flexible regarding the start and end time for a shift.

Qualifications
  • Prior customer service or similar experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal communications and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to learn information about changing exhibitions and share this with visitors
  • Ability to engage museum visitors when they have questions or suggestions
  • Comfortable interacting with diverse clientele, including everyone from toddlers to professors
  • Comfortable using technology and computer software
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as without immediate supervision
  • Knowledge of or interest in art

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, traverse all museum spaces, including stairs
  • Ability to hear people speak with background noise, hear equipment sounds and alarms
  • Ability to move lounge furniture and lift up to 25-lbs with or without assistance
  • Due to the physical limitations of the historic building, must be able to navigate stairs to lead and guide guests during emergencies
