Position Summary
The Library Assistant performs important, behind-the-scenes tasks that keep the library functioning smoothly, including shelving, stack maintenance, pulling and delivering books from offsite storage and special collections locations, shifting, and inventory.
Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Use the library’s circulation system to check in books and scan books used in-house.
- Shelve all books returned, used, or received in the library.
- Pick up and deliver materials requested from the library’s offsite storage facility; return and reshelve materials after use.
- Maintain shelves in proper call number order, shelf-reading as necessary to keep collections orderly and accessible.
- Assist with maintaining Manton Reading Room, keeping materials orderly and current.
- Assist with scanning library materials for document delivery to local patrons and through Interlibrary Lending, in accordance with copyright laws and guidelines.
- Assist with shifting projects as needed when collections are moved/reorganized.
- As needed, assist with processing materials, e.g. prepare and apply labels, RFID tags and barcodes; update catalog records; process new acquisitions.
- Identify materials in need of repair or relabeling.
- Conduct regular inventories, check security tags and locate mis-shelved books.
- Other duties as assigned.
