The security team is responsible for providing a safe and engaging environment for museum employees and visitors, as well as campus tenants and their visitors, by patrolling and securing the galleries and grounds, as well as monitoring the campus while posted in the museum’s lobby.

MASS MoCA is accepting applications for a full-time Security Guard for 3rd Shift. 

Hours: Full-time/40 hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00pm-7:00am

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitors and protects museum visitors, staff, assets, and equipment, as well as campus tenants, their customers, and property
  • Responds to all medical and other emergencies
  • Serves as first point of contact for emergency personnel arriving on campus
  • Completes regular tours of museum buildings and campus, locks/unlocks/monitors entrances, exits, galleries, office spaces, and tenant spaces as necessary
  • Reports hazardous and unsafe conditions to appropriate departments
  • Works closely with Box Office and Museum Attendant staff to support the museum’s goals of exemplary customer service and visitor experience
  • Responds to requests for assistance from Museum Attendants and other museum staff
  • Gives directions and informs visitors of museum and campus policies and guidelines
  • Provides crowd control and security for all museum events and festivals
  • Directs traffic and parking
  • Assists with wayfinding for visitors and helps with lost children (and adults)
  • Monitors surveillance systems
  • Coordinates shipments and deliveries with departments and tenants as needed
  • Attends mandatory and recommended training about the art, customer service, safety, and other topics as required
  • Writes reports documenting unusual observations, occurrences, and incidents, as well as log-sheets and other daily paperwork
  • Responds to all security requests on campus, relays messages to Supervisor
  • Completes all incident reports by taking the time to investigate; promptly reports incidents or risks that require Supervisor’s attention
  • Maintains a courteous, respectful, and professional manner at all times
  • Observes the highest standards of conduct of the department and organization
  • Helps to maintain the highest standards of integrity, credibility, and trustworthiness
  • All other security duties as needed and required

Qualifications:

  • A MASS MoCA Security Guard requires a high school diploma (or GED) or job-related work experience
  • Our Guards must be -- or willing to be -- trained and certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED, as well as other emergency procedures (i.e., fire and disaster evacuations, active shooter)
  • Acts as a team player who works well with others, and shows courtesy and respect to colleagues
  • Capable of working alone and as part of a team
  • Has strong people skills, including diplomacy and empathy
  • Has strong verbal, communication, and analytical skills
  • Is adept in conflict resolution; ability to de-escalate a wide range of situations
  • Has strong attention to detail, and ability for multi-tasking and critical thinking
  • Capable of exercising discretion and independent judgment
  • Is proficient in, or willing to learn, use of a radio communication system
  • Has proficient and legible writing skills (handwritten and typed)
  • Regular and punctual attendance 

Work Conditions:

  • This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, availability on weekends and holidays, and for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours.
  • This position requires outdoor patrolling year-round, which may include inclement weather
  • This position may require work in dimly lit areas, and/or may be subject to strobe lights or other photosensitive situations

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist, bend, sit, walk, stand, and use repetitive movements of the hands
  • Must have excellent hearing, vision, and sense of smell in order to be acutely aware of the surrounding environment
  • Able to lift, carry, and operate a 25 pound fire extinguisher
  • Must be able to wear PPE when necessary

Non-exempt. Minimum starting wage: $19.00/hour plus $1.00/hour shift differential.
