MASS MoCA’s Performing Arts Department seeks to grow its pool of skilled On-Call/Temporary/Seasonal Festival Generalist to assist in the production and operations of large-scale events and concerts throughout the year. 

The On-Call/Temporary Festival Generalist and is a temporary/seasonal hourly position that will work alongside the full time production and festival staff to supplement the team’s needs. The schedule is project specific, with time frames ranging from 1-2 days or longer for specific projects. 

At the direction of the Performing Arts staff, these roles will assist in the logistics and experiences of both artists and audience during MASS MoCA’s festivals and concerts. Specific duties will vary depending on area of assignment, which include production, festival operations, artist services, and front of house.

The ideal candidate will have some prior knowledge of festivals and/or stagecraft, and be a team player who will work to achieve deadlines collaboratively.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Excellent work ethic, craftsmanship, practical problem-solving, creative thinking, embracing collaborative practice, and understanding of team spirit 
  • The ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, collaborators, and artists 
  • A high level of professional consideration when interacting with visiting artists and staff
  • Preferred: A valid driver’s license (if needed) and may be asked to drive, load/unload and pack various straight trucks from 16 to 40ft.
  • Certain positions may require that the candidate be certified to safely operate, Genie, Condor and Scissor lifts.
  • The most competitive candidate will have experience working with artists to realize their vision. 

Work Conditions 

  • Some duties of this position require being able to work outside, potentially in inclement weather for extended periods of time
  • This position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, with availability on weekends, evenings and holidays, for events, programs, and festivals, including those after museum hours
  • This position may require work in dimly lit areas, and/or may be subject to strobe lights or other photo sensitive situations

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit for extended periods of time with limited breaks
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arm, and reach above shoulder height
  • The employee is regularly required to climb or balance, squat, kneel, and crouch. 
  • The employee must regularly be able to lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds and move heavy objects as required.
  • Ability to climb ladders and operate mechanical lifts and power tools
  • Ability, mobility, and license to drive a motor vehicle
  • Acute vision, hearing, voice, smell, and sense of touch
  • Employee is required to move about their work area, between buildings and the campus grounds, ascend and descend stairs
  • Must be able to wear PPE when necessary
