Lead Gallery Teacher (Full-Time)

The Lead Gallery Teacher facilitates museum experiences for visitors of all ages, with the goals of building confidence in looking at art, providing tools for engaging with a wide range of visual art, and forging connections between visitors and the works of art on view. Gallery Teachers lead a variety of museum-wide tours for visitors of all ages, which include interactive discussions and hands-on art-making activities. The position also involves engaging visitors in the Kidspace gallery through conversations around the artwork and providing art-making activities at the ArtBar, and assisting with in-person public programming. Additionally, the Lead Gallery Teacher assists with scheduling and confirming group guided visits and partnership tours. In collaboration with the Director of Education and partnership schools, the Lead Gallery Teacher assists with the design of tour outlines and related curricula activities and art projects. The lead Galley Teacher assists the department with the oversight of content materials related to museum exhibitions used for Gallery Teacher and Museum Attendant training.


The ideal candidate will have a background in education or the arts; at least 1 year work experience is preferred. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. The candidate should be skilled as an effective communicator; can work independently, but also as a team player; and has an outgoing, positive personality and a knack for connecting with people of many backgrounds. Experience with teaching within museum settings is a plus. 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for distances across the museum
  • Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required for employment

As defined by the National Labor Relations Act, this position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110.
