The Town of Becket is accepting applications for a full-time Mechanic position. Under the direction of the Highway Superintendent, the primary responsibility of this position is the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and preventative servicing of the Town's fleet of vehicles and equipment, including those used by the Highway Department, Police Department, Fire Department, EMS, and Animal Control Officer.

Duties include troubleshooting mechanical issues; performing inspections, oil changes, lubrication, and repairs; and providing other preventative maintenance necessary to keep Town vehicles and equipment in safe and reliable operating condition.

When time allows and after mechanical responsibilities have been addressed, the employee will assist the Highway Department with road maintenance, snow and ice operations, equipment operation, and other related public works activities as assigned.

This is a benefitted position with an hourly wage of up to $35.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Position Description

DEFINITION

This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of all Department of Public Works (DPW) vehicles and equipment, as well as the Town of Becket’s fleet vehicles, including those assigned to the Police Department, Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), DPW, and Animal Control Officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Fleet maintenance and repair.
  • Welding and fabrication.
  • Maintain records to comply with DOT regulations.
  • Assist with capital outlay purchasing and special projects.
  • Assist the Superintendent and the foreman with other various highway operations.
  • Perform duties as an operator of equipment and a truck driver
  • Participate in the snow removal program. Provides on-call duties during snow emergencies and operating snow plowing, removal, sanding and salting equipment.
  • Assist other town departments as required.
  • Making recommendations regarding future repairs and maintenance projects
  • Responsible for seeking quotes while ordering parts and equipment to ensure “best price” for standard equipment.
  • Perform a variety of related duties as necessary.

 SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Under the general direction of the Superintendent and Working Foreman, the employee plans and prioritizes the work independently, in accordance with standard practices and previous training. Employees are expected to solve most problems of detail or unusual situations by adapting methods or interpreting instructions accordingly.  Instructions for new assignments or special projects usually consist of statements of desired objectives, deadlines, and priorities.  Technical and policy problems or changes in procedures are discussed with supervisors. 

JUDGMENT AND COMPLEXITY

The work consists of a variety of duties which follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines.  The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.  Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation or guideline.

 NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Relationships are primarily with co-workers, vendors and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems.  Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outside organizations.  More than ordinary courtesy, tact and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed people.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or equivalent, and three to five years of related mechanical and maintenance experience, preferably in a public works operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position. Educational level sufficient to understand and follow specific verbal or written instructions, and to provide written equipment and other requisite reports.

LICENSURES

Must possess valid Massachusetts Class A or B Commercial Driver License or equivalent from reciprocal state (CDL) with Air Brake Certification, ASE light duty brake certification, Massachusetts Hydraulic and Hoisters Licenses 1C, 2A. A willingness to work towards achieving ASE Mechanics Certification for heavy and/or light duty vehicles is preferred; possession of automotive hand tools to complete work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS

Knowledge: Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment needed for the successful operation of a municipal vehicle maintenance and repair facility. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions to be exercised to ensure safe operation of equipment and to ensure the safety of fellow workers and the public. Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, welding and hoisting. 

 Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other department personnel and members of the public. Ability to provide training and work direction to others. Ability to read, understand and interpret other technical documents. Ability to perform strenuous physical work. Ability to operate a computer and specialized software applications and systems for computerized vehicle diagnostic codes.

 Skills: Vehicle & Equipment diagnostic and repair skills. Welding and metal fabrication skills preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease.  Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.  May be required to be on call for 24 hours or being under prolonged pressure during emergency situations. 

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills

Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area.  In addition, pulling, pushing, standing or walking for the full work day may also be required. 

Motor Skills

Duties involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
