Highway Dept. Equipment Operator/Truck Driver – Fulltime/Benefitted

 The Town of Becket Highway Department is seeking qualified applicants for the Equipment Operator / Truck Driver position. Class A or B CDL license and 2 A Hoisting license are required.  Salary:  $30.14 per hour. Position Title:         Equipment Operator / Truck Driver

 Statement of Duties

 Position is responsible for operating heavy equipment and trucks (dump truck (light and heavy)motor grader, front end loader, loader/backhoe, excavator, roller and tractor used in the construction and maintenance of public ways and town facilities. Performs related work as required.

  Supervision

 Employee works under the general supervision of the Highway Superintendent or Working Foreman.  Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction.  Any questionable cases are referred to the supervisor for clarification or interpretation.  Supervisor checks employee’s work only to insure that completed work methods used are technically accurate, and that instructions are being followed.  Employee is required to work outside normal business hours as needed, and is on call at all times to respond to emergencies.

 Position is occasionally required to oversee work crews in the absence of the Superintendent and the Working Foreman.  Position does not have access to confidential information.

 Job Environment

 Position responsibilities require the use of judgment and initiative to interpret the numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions governing the work.  Employee is expected to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline for a given situation.

 Errors in vehicle or equipment operation can result in personal injury/loss, delay or loss of service, injury to other employees, and/or damage to buildings or equipment.

 The employee has occasional contact with the public in responding to inquiries and providing information and assistance.  Position has daily contact with the Police Department to provide information regarding road conditions.  Contact usually occur in person, via two-way radio, or on the phone.

Position Functions

 Essential Functions

 Operates / drives heavy equipment and trucks in the performance of construction and maintenance of public ways and town facilities.

  • Operates / drives heavy equipment in the performance of removing ice and snow from public ways and town facilities.

 Required to operate trucks delivering materials, snow plowing, sanding, or other construction and maintenance equipment.

 Required to perform hand labor when not operating equipment.

 Performs routine maintenance and repair tasks to equipment including changing oil, greasing, welding, and replacing worn or broken parts.

 Performs similar or related duties as required.

 Recommended Minimal Qualifications

             Physical and Mental Requirements

 Employee works on loud construction sites, and is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moving mechanical parts more than 2/3rd of the time; high places, confined spaces, risk of cave-ins, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, extremes of heat and cold, hazardous driving conditions, work with explosives, and risk of electric shock up to 1/3rd of the time.  Employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, and reach with hands and arms up to 2/3rd of the time; talk/listen, climb and/or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or smell up to 1/3rd of the time.  Employee occasionally lifts up to 60 lbs., and seldom lifts more than 100 lbs.  Normal vision is required for this position.  Equipment operated includes trucks in excess of 26,001 lbs., light trucks, heavy equipment, light equipment, pneumatic tools, power tools, welding equipment, and hand tools.

 Education and Experience

 A candidate for this position should have a High School diploma or equivalent, with apprentice level of knowledge and experience in the operation of heavy trucks and heavy equipment, and construction work; three to five (3-5) years minimum experience in construction trades including the operation of heavy trucks and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

 Special Requirements

 A candidate for this position is required to have a valid Class A or Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement and Class 2-A hydraulic license.  

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 A candidate for this position should have knowledge of:

  • Materials, methods, and current practices essential to the maintenance of town streets and roadways
  • Safety guidelines

 Skill in:

  • Safe and effective heavy equipment and vehicle operation techniques

 And ability to:

  • Follow directions and work independently
  • Detect and report equipment malfunctions
  • Perform the physical requirements of the position in all types of weather and often under emergency conditions
  • Operate equipment and trucks in a safe manner
