The Town of Adams is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Laborer within the Department of Public Works. This is a full time/ 40 hours per week position with a pay rate of $22.72 per hour and with benefits including paid time-off, state/federal holidays, pension, health, life, and dental insurance. A deferred compensation plan is also available.

This position performs semi-skilled manual labor and operates a variety of equipment and vehicles, such as non-commercial rated plow trucks. This position performs construction/maintenance activities on Town infrastructure, including highway, sewer, stormwater, parks & grounds, and flood control infrastructure.

Applicant should have H.S. diploma or equivalent, along with knowledge, experience and skill in the construction trades and/or working knowledge of construction equipment, operations and maintenance. Must have ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions; must possess a valid MA Class D driver’s license (or equivalent).

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent strenuous physical effort generally required in performing work in the field.  Frequent heavy lifting in excess of 50 pounds required. 
  • Ability to work within confined areas such as trenches, vehicles, etc.  for extended periods of time.  

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school graduation or equivalent; work related experience demonstrating ability to perform above functions; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skills

  • Working knowledge of construction equipment operation and mechanics.
  • Working knowledge or ability to learn basic construction trades such as masonry, carpentry, etc.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and carry out assigned tasks and work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to be patient and polite with members of public and co-workers.
  • Possession of a Class D motor vehicle license required. 
  • Basic National Incidence Management System/Incident Command System training will be required.
