DescriptionThe Latina/o Studies Program at Williams College welcomes applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Latinx religious studies and/or the study of spiritual practices, broadly and interdisciplinarily defined, to start July 1, 2026. Established in 2004, the Latina/o Studies Program at Williams College is unique as a free-standing liberal arts Latinx Studies program in the United States. Areas of interest for the position include Latina/o/x religion, theology, faith/spirituality, and/or sacred spaces and texts, encompassing a range of Latina/o/x beliefs and practices. We welcome attention to Latina/o/x Indigeneities and/or Afro-Latinidades. We also encourage applications that bridge Latinx religious studies and other interdisciplinary fields that employ methodologies grounded in lived experiences and practices. The usual course load is 4 courses per academic year: 2 in the fall semester and 2 in the spring semester.
We seek a colleague who approaches Latinx religious studies in ways that can mutually enrich the vibrant community and interdisciplinary curriculum of the Latina/o Studies Program and demonstrates enthusiasm about working in the Williams College liberal arts academic environment. Our program embraces comparative, relational, and interracial/ethnic approaches that consider the breadth of national-origin groups categorized as "Latina/o/x," including Afro-Latina/o/xs and Indigenous Latinos/as/xs, as well as the broader racial/ethnic contexts that have shaped the United States, both historically and in the present. In recognition of the diverse countries of origin and ongoing connections to these countries, the Program also centers global, hemispheric, and transnational dynamics, ranging from geopolitics and globalized economies to lived experiences and creative expressions. In a field that has been at the forefront of exploring intersectionality, we seek a colleague who is attentive to complexities, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and disability.
QualificationsA PhD or other terminal degree is expected at the beginning of the appointment. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and strongly encourage individuals whose experiences and perspectives will enhance our commitment to academic excellence and innovation to apply. We ask that you state in your cover letter how you would enhance and broaden the spectrum of offerings and educational experiences in Latina/o/x Studies at Williams College, as well as contribute to the field more broadly if hired. In addition to your cover letter, please submit your curriculum vitae, a brief description of your scholarly/artistic work (no more than five pages), and a brief description of three original courses that you might design and want to teach if appointed. Additional materials will be requested from those who advance in the search, including three letters of recommendation, a writing sample, and/or a portfolio of 7-10 creative works.
