Deliver professional nursing care for members of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) community.  The Registered Nurse will be responsible for nursing duties including, but not limited to, triage, health assessment and assisting health care providers (HCPs); and will provide proficient age specific and developmentally appropriate nursing care to college students.



  • Commitment to delivering professional, evidence-based nursing practice and best practices within the profession for members of the MCLA Community; this includes acute primary care, urgent and emergency care.
  • Provide initial assessment, evaluation, and triage or treatment of minor episodic medical problems following departmental policy, scope of practice, and nursing processes; refer cases that require further medical intervention to the appropriate HCPs.
  • Reports to Director of Health Services. In the absence of the Director, the Registered Nurse will report to the Nurse Practitioner. 
  • Actively participate within the guidelines according to the MCLA policies and procedures and nurse standing orders as defined through the MA Board of Nursing.
  • Apply ethical principles and code of professional practice as established in the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adhere to departmental, division, and college policies and procedures.
  • Incorporate self-care, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness theories with a focus on the 8 dimensions of wellness into daily practice.
  • Assess and coordinate response to students exposed to communicable disease. Identify, direct, and refer issues which require intervention by a HCP, following departmental infection control guidelines; assist with surveillance of infectious disease and exposures, including investigating the circumstances of the exposure, providing counseling to students, and maintaining the necessary documentation and reports.
  • Provide support and/or participate in health promotion/disease prevention programs, such as blood pressure clinics and health fairs and other events.
  • Able to perform CLIA waived laboratory tests.
  • Respond in a timely manner to patient questions concerning treatment, medications, conditions, and appointment requests, etc., collaborating with the HCPs on these issues.
  • Comply with HIPPAA and FERPA privacy and confidentiality requirements.
  • Promote patient rights and responsibilities.
  • Participate in activities that improve the delivery of patient care, including continuing education/training, research, quality improvement projects, committees and special projects as requested.
  •  Act as a resource to students, faculty, and staff according to the scope of practice.
  • Assess patient education process; identify strengths and weaknesses and make required changes/adjustments accordingly.
  • Maintain working knowledge of equipment and supplies; maintain exam room stock; collaborate with the departmental point person for the ordering of supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  • Identify and refer students to both on campus and off-campus resources.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the campus community.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of health and wellness programs for the MCLA Community, including acting as a liaison for Health Services in establishing relationships, communication, and collaboration with other department to develop and implement various programming for students.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to functionally use standard office productivity software such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel and EMR documentation.
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills, with ability to ensure timely and high-quality documentation.
  • Understands, values and respects diversity as an individual, in a team and within groups while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Use of active and interpersonal communication skills for work team effectiveness.
  • Maintain professional credentials.
  • Attend periodic meetings and participate actively in committees as appointed.
  • Perform other duties assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Diploma/AS degree accepted. BS or higher preferred from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-licensure experience is required.
  • Must hold a current Registered Nurse license in MA.
  • Acquires the skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to practice in the area of college health.
  • Emergency/trauma nursing experience preferred.
  • Proficient with phone and in person emergency triage.
  • Possess skills to identify and de-escalate mental health crisis situations.
  • Partakes in ongoing educational activities related to clinical knowledge and professional skills.
  • Takes part in lifelong learning to keep abreast of the diverse health issues affecting college students.
  • Seeks knowledge and skills appropriate to college health care and integrates new information and methodologies.
  • Competent in conducting health needs assessments for the MCLA Community, selecting priority health issues, measuring nursing objectives, implementing nursing interventions and plans of care. Evaluates the effectiveness of the action plan and reports learning outcomes.
  • Experience with phlebotomy, immunizations, PPD skin testing and communicable disease exposures preferred.        
  • CPR-Healthcare Provider certified.


Additional Information:

This is a Part-Time, non-benefited position with an hourly wage of $30.00/hour to $35.00/hour.
