Overview

The Town of Adams, Massachusetts is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant Plant Mechanic at the Adams Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a full time/ 40 hours per week position with a pay rate of $24.78 per hour and with benefits including paid time-off, state/federal holidays, pension, health, life, and dental insurance. A deferred compensation plan is also available.

Work is generally performed under shop and pump station conditions, with some exposure to hazardous chemicals, oils, solvents, explosive and toxic conditions, and electrical hazards.  Some work is performed outside on various equipment with exposure to variable weather conditions. 

Essential functions include assisting the mechanic in maintaining and repairing facility machinery, electrical works, pump stations, and other equipment as required.  Frequent referral to machinery and equipment operation manuals and blueprints. Assists in the work of the Plant Mechanic to become knowledgeable in the maintenance and repair of all plant equipment.

Possession of a Massachusetts Class D Driver’s license is required. Massachusetts Certification as Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and a Hoisting Engineer’s License class 2-B is required or must be obtained within 18 months.

General Duties

  • Skilled technical work in maintenance and repair of the municipal plant and facility related to electrical, pump and engine repair, generators, etc.,
  • All other related work as required.

Supervision

  • Works under the direction of the Plant Mechanic, Chief Operator, Superintendent, or other supervisory personnel.
  • Performs responsible duties as directed requiring the use of independent judgment in maintaining and/or operating equipment at the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations.

Job Environment

  • Work is generally performed under shop and pump station conditions, with some exposure to hazardous chemicals, oils, solvents, explosive and toxic conditions, and electrical hazards. 
  • Some work is performed outside on various equipment with exposure to variable weather conditions.
  • Makes frequent contact with other municipal departments, plant personnel, vendors, and engineers.
  • Communication is by telephone, in-person discussion and in writing.
  • Errors could result in plant failure, lower standards of service, personal injury to self and/or others, danger to public health and safety, and monetary loss to the Town.  

Essential Functions

  • Assists Plant Mechanic in maintaining and repairing facility machinery, electrical works, pump stations, and other equipment as required. 
  • Frequent referral to machinery and equipment operation manuals and blueprints.
  • Assists in the work of the Plant Mechanic to become knowledgeable in the maintenance and repair of all plant equipment.
  • May be required to work independently with minimal or general supervision. 
  • Evaluates and repairs plant equipment. 
  • Responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance of all plant equipment. 
  • Installs and removes large and delicate types of equipment. 
  • Ensures proper functioning of all electrical power generating sets and switch gear.
  • Assists in the update of repair records; assists in stocking of materials and supplies. 
  • Operation of plant processing equipment.
  • Assists in grounds keeping tasks such as grass mowing, trimming, snow plowing and snow shoveling at the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations. 
  • Trimming of bushes, trees, branches, and brush.
  • Assists in the calibration and programming of various sensors, probes, and other devices, both stationery and handheld. 
  • Active duty or stand-by duty required on weekends and holidays. 
  • Attendance at facility inspections is required.
  • May occasionally be called upon to assist other divisions of the Department of Public Works on a rotating basis during an emergency.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in wastewater operations or a similar field or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

  • Mechanical aptitude with basic knowledge in the plumbing and electrical areas. 
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods and techniques of equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to learn the policies and operating procedures of the wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations. 
  • Ability to perform tasks from written or verbal instructions. 
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.
  • Possession of a Massachusetts Class D Driver’s license.
  • Massachusetts Certification as Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license and a Hoisting Engineer’s license class 2-B must be obtained within eighteen (18) months.

Upon satisfactory performance evaluations, obtaining the Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license, passing a job-based examination indicating that the individual possesses the qualifications to work independently as the Plant Mechanic, and meeting the required minimum qualifications, the individual may be promoted to the Plant Mechanic position.

  • National Incidence Management System training will be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Constant moderate to strenuous physical effort required in performing work duties. 
  • Frequently required to move (push, pull, lift, or carry) objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. 
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch, turn and twist.
  • Requires good close, distant, and peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Required to operate hand tools requiring manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work within confined area such as manholes for sample testing and repairs. 
  • Work is performed under shop and field conditions with some exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosive and toxic conditions, and electrical hazards, as well as weather extremes.
  • Ability to access all areas of multi-level facility.
