The Director of Community Impact (DOCI) designs, implements, evaluates, and continuously improves the programmatic activities for Berkshire United Way (BUW). The DOCI works collaboratively with nonprofits, schools, volunteers, and community leaders to improve community conditions in the Berkshires, with particular focus on outcomes in early childhood education, positive youth development, and economic mobility. Impact work focuses on strategic initiatives, community education and engagement, advocacy, and grant making. This senior staff position serves as a community leader with expertise in facilitating community change and an understanding of the theory of change for BUW’s three priority areas. The DOCI is knowledgeable about the two-generational approach in family supports, is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusive practices, and provides overall leadership, vision, and execution of strategies that result in sustainable community change.

The DOIC provides internal leadership for the program staff and supports all the Community Impact committees. This position is responsible for ensuring that BUW has the infrastructure to lead community change and manage the organizations grant making and programmatic activities. The DOIC serves as an external leader and is responsible for articulating our community impact work and engaging partners in our collaborative efforts. While the primary responsibility is for community impact goals, the DOIC actively contributes to the resource development efforts and the overall goals of BUW. The DOIC serves on the leadership team and plays an important role in alignment of services and strategies, and in the creation of a collaborative culture.

BA/BS in social work, human services, or related field; MA preferred.

Other requirements:

  • Strong supervisory skills and experience leading effective teams.
  • Knowledge of human service systems and the nonprofit ecosystem in Berkshire County.
  • Experience in community impact, coalition development, project management, and evaluation.
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to work effectively with a variety of people.
  • Ability to motivate and retain volunteers, including donors and board members.   
  • Proven time management, planning, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Effective communicator, including writing, speaking, and listening skills.
  • Must have flexible schedule to attend events in the early morning, evening, and weekends.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to travel to off-site work obligations.
  • Must be reliable, a team player, and willing to do other duties as assigned.
