Physical Therapy is a related service that is designed to assist a child with a disability to access the general curriculum in the least restrictive environment as much as possible.
This position is for the school year only.
Job Goal: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to injury and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools.
Supervision: Reports to the Director of Student Support Services.
Assists School Nurse Leader and administrators in developing school health program.
Participates in work of health curriculum committee.
Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters, as directed by the School Nurse Supervisor.
Visits student homes when necessary.
Makes recommendations to School Nurse Supervisor on health needs of individual students.
Performs accurate and thorough student evaluations utilizing a variety of evaluation tools; interprets results within professional abilities and boundaries.
Shows good knowledge of variety of treatment techniques for various diagnoses.
Regularly assesses the needs of the students, sets realistic and appropriate goals; discusses these with the student and other involved professionals as needed; adjusts treatment plan based upon these assessments.
Recognizes the need for referral to other health care professionals (e.g., occupational therapist, etc.) during the course of patient care; makes appropriate communication and arrangements.
Gives the student feedback regarding his/her participation and response to therapy in a professional, encouraging manner.
Documents student response to therapy for each treatment session in a timely manner.
Prepares appropriate paperwork for outside agencies in a timely and clear manner.
Maintains all appropriate documentation on students receiving treatment.
Contacts physician or other professional when there is a question regarding the prescribed orders or other information received (e.g., diagnosis, report of different tests, etc.).
Identifies when a change in the treatment plan is warranted and makes appropriate changes based upon the response of the patient.
Demonstrates an ability to exercise independent judgment in a majority of situations.
Recognizes any changes in the student’s condition or behavior and reports such changes immediately.
Demonstrates sound professional judgment when choosing different evaluation tools, treatment techniques and in interpreting test or treatment results.
Participates in in-service training programs.
Attends I.E.P. meetings.
Any other related duties as may be assigned by Administration.
Special Knowledge/Abilities For Position: The position requires the applicant to be fluent in Microsoft Word. The applicant must possess basic computer skills, as well as, strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to drive in order to do home evaluation and home visits. Must be able to work with various electrical equipment, such as high or low volt electrical stimulator, ultrasound and other machines. Must be able to handle more than one task or patient at a time. Must be able to organize time efficiently.

Required: Current Massachusetts licensure as a Physical Therapist. B.S. in Physical Therapy from an accredited school. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited school. Three years of prior work experience in physical therapy. Physical Requirements: Must be able to tolerate sitting, prolonged standing, walking and climbing stairs. Must be able to reach, bend, and squat at times. Must be able to carry 30-40 pounds in order to carry equipment and supplies. Must be able to push and maneuver a wheelchair in order to transport a 250 pound student. Must be able to transfer students up to 200 pounds who require maximal assistance. There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines. The use of medical equipment is also required. Environmental Conditions: Must be able to work in various setting, such as indoors and outdoors, occasionally in a student’s home, in the community and its contracted agencies. May be exposed to sharp objects, various levels of noise, disagreeable odors, agitated and emotionally distraught students and families, environmental hazards, infectious diseases and chemical agents. The occupant may come into contact with medical and/or bodily fluids.
