The Williams College Office of Communications seeks an energetic Web Developer to help build and maintain the college’s web presence. Reporting to the Director of Web Strategy & Development, you will be part of the team that designs and implements website functionality, from front-end templates to the server-side software that powers them. As a creative, open-minded problem solver, you will contribute to the team’s strategic decision-making process and be encouraged to pursue your professional development interests.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and extend the college’s WordPress content management system (CMS)
  • Build user interfaces that are well designed, accessible, responsive and standards-compliant
  • Design information architectures that make content easier to find, navigate and maintain
  • Optimize front-end templates for accessibility and performance
  • Partner with offices and departments throughout the college to implement new web initiatives
  • Thoroughly test new functionality; assist with QA after system upgrades; troubleshoot and resolve issues related to website development including coding errors and browser compatibility

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 4 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience (a Bachelor’s is considered the equivalent of 2 years experience)
  • Experience coding in PHP and JavaScript
  • Fluency in HTML5 and CSS
  • Ability to build web interfaces using UI/UX best practices
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work productively with non-technical peers
  • Solid grasp of CMS APIs for theme & plugin development
  • Experience using git or GitHub for source control
  • Familiarity with the WCAG 2.1 accessibility specification and experience building interfaces that meet the AA standard preferred
  • Experience with React or another front-end Javascript framework preferred
  • Experience using ElasticSearch for search and as a document store preferred
  • Ability to build complex layouts using Wordpress page builder plugins
  • Experience with workflow optimization tools (node/npm, webpack, SCSS, etc)
