Letters of application are being accepted for the position of boys junior varsity/assistant football coach for the 2024-2025 school year. All applicants must be familiar with educational and safety standards of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, DESE www.doe.mass.edu, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, MIAA www.miaa.net and the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference, PVIAC www.pviac.net. Applicants must have the ability to coach, mentor and instruct on all aspects of the sport and have the ability to work with young adults. Applicants must have the ability to use sound judgment, maintain dignified behavior, maintain team discipline and establish favorable relationships with players, other coaches, game officials and spectators is expected. All junior varsity coaches are responsible to the principal and report through the varsity coach and athletic director.

McCann Athletics Mission - to provide positive athletic experiences for our student athletes that emphasize teamwork, discipline, citizenship, and sportsmanship. McCann athletic programs value the lessons learned and the character developed, through participation in team sports rather than winning contests or championships.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of instructional techniques and individual learning styles.
  • Completion of the MIAA sponsored or approved coaches education course of study.
  • Completion of the on-line course “Concussion in Sports – What you need to Know”.
  • Knowledge of sport and competitive standards.
  • Possess an understanding of human physiology, growth and development.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association standards.
  • Knowledge of district concussion and related policies and regulations.
  • Must be CPR/AED certified.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report directly to the athletic director (first level) or principal (second level)
  • The junior varsity coach is responsible for enforcing all school and athletic policies and rules pertinent to the athletic department.
  • The junior varsity coach will not allow any individual to practice, receive equipment and/or/uniforms, nor allow participation in any contest until he/she has been cleared for participation by the school nurse at the beginning of the season or by the student’s physician upon return from injury.
  • The junior varsity coach will ensure that the student athletes involved in the program reflect positively on the school at-large.
  • The junior varsity coach will be the last person to leave the site after practices or contests. Student athletes shall be supervised at all times.
  • The junior varsity coach will be responsible for the conduct of their players while involved in school athletic activities during travel to and from contest sites, at the contests, and at the conclusion of contests.
  • The junior varsity coach will issue, collect, and inventory all athletic equipment and supplies for their sport at the beginning and end of each season.
  • The junior varsity coach will not use profanity in any verbal and/or written communication.
  • The junior varsity coach will develop appropriate practice schedules and practice plans that instruct and demonstrate the skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team improvement.
  • The junior varsity coach will set the standard of conduct and effort consistent with the school’s mission and discipline code, and determine the objectives and format for practices and game strategies.
  • The junior varsity coach will create and submit a practice schedule to the athletic director prior to the start of the season when applicable.
  • The junior varsity coach will adhere to all financial policies of the district in regard to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
  • The junior varsity coach will check and ensure all office, storage room, and outside doors are locked, after the last player leaves, after games and practices.
  • The junior varsity coach will receive approval from the athletic director and principal for all adults associated with their sport.
  • The junior varsity coach will professionally represent McCann in interactions with students, parents, community, staff, game officials, and media.
  • The junior varsity coach will assist athletes in reaching their fullest potential physically and mentally through hard work and constant self-improvement.
  • The junior varsity coach will encourage academic performance and achievement of student-athletes, not just to ensure academic eligibility, but to enhance their potential for future education and employment.
