Child Care of the Berkshires is a large not-for profit, early care and family support agency, operating a variety of programs throughout Berkshire County, including child care centers, a network of family child care homes, home visiting programs, parent child playgroups, parent education and skill building programs.

Its mission is to promote and strengthen families through the provision of high quality child care services to families whose parents are working or in training or, for any number of reasons, cannot adequately care for the children as well as other types of social and educational services which directly affect families and their well being.

SEEKING:   We are seeking a Temporary Family Support Specialist for our Family Center for our Northern Berkshires location

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Family Support Specialist will provide family support services and family engagement to help increase the Strengthening Families protective factors in families as part of the Family Center team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Make supportive phone calls with parents based on strength-based philosophy. Work with families to identify their needs and goals to link them to services and opportunities, then make referrals to other services and community resources as needed. 
  • Refer parents to internal or external programs as appropriate.
  • Assist with phone calls to help complete financial assistance for families.
  • Assist with getting concrete resources and supports to families.
  • Assist with organization of concrete resources for families, including clothing exchange, Healthy Me kits, and diapers.
  • Assist with coverage of Play and Learn Groups. Set up activities and model parent-child interactions. Provide a circle time, read to children using dialogic reading techniques, sing songs and lead finger plays and simple movement activities. Must be comfortable leading an activity with both children and parents.
  • Outreach to local organizations in-person to link families in the community to the Family Center and ParentChild+. 
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have excellent communication skills and a strength-based philosophy
  • Must demonstrate independence, dependability, and flexibility
  • Must be non-judgmental
  • Experience in family support preferred
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in social work, education or related field preferred
  • Ability to establish rapport with people from different ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.  

SCHEDULE:    

The Family Support Specialist is based out of our Family Center office in North Adams and will work 11 hours per week with a flexible schedule.  The position is temporary, running from September 2024 to June 2025.  There will be opportunities to work additional hours to assist with Family Center events. 

SALARY RANGE:  $17-$18 per hour
