DEFINITION/PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

    • The Diabetes Educator RD has additional knowledge in diabetes and diabetes self-management training/support obtained through working within a Self-Management education program and through continuing education credits approved by the American Diabetes Association and/or has achieved and maintained Certified Diabetes Educator status. Depending on the level of practice, the Diabetes Educator performs a diabetes assessment, develops an educational plan, provides diabetes self-management education, and revises the plan as needed in conjunction with the physician's medical plan. The patient and family participate in this process. The Diabetes Educator works as part of a multi-disciplinary approach. The Diabetes Educator participates in community education and the promotion of healthy behaviors and prevention.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise.)

    • Experience:
      • RD: Two years of providing clinical nutrition care in a hospital or community setting strongly preferred.
      • Experience in direct counseling of patients and families to facilitate behavior change and disease management strongly preferred.
      • Experience in the nutritional management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients strongly preferred.
      • Demonstrated effective group presentation skills required.
      • Experience in use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint required.
    • Education and Training:
      • Registered Dieticians: Master's Degree required.
      • Certified Diabetes Educator status (AADE practice levels: Intermediate or Expert level) strongly preferred and given preference.
    • License, Certification & Registration:
      • Current RD licensure in Massachusetts.
      • Current registration with American Dietetic Association.
      • Certified Diabetes Educator status achieved within 5 years of employment is required (employees who work less than 16 hours per week are excluded from CDE requirement but must maintain yearly CEUs per departmental certification requirements). Maintaining certification throughout employment is required.
    • Other Requirements:
      • Maintain yearly continuing education units per departmental certification requirements until CDE status achieved.
