The Staff Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a Registered Nurse with specialized education and documented competency in perioperative nursing practice consistent with the RNFA Standards of Practice established by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) through successful completion of a post-basic nursing education program whose intent is the preparation of registered nurses to practice as first assistants at surgery. While functioning in the RNFA role, the RN works under the direct supervision of the surgeon.

Registered Nurse is the designation given to an individual who is licensed to practice professional nursing, holds ultimate responsibility for direct and indirect nursing care, is a graduate of an approved school for professional nursing, and is currently licensed as a Registered Nurse pursuant to M.G.L. c.112. Included in such responsibility is providing nursing care, health maintenance, teaching, counseling, planning and restoration for optimal functioning and comfort, of those they serve.

The Registered Professional Nurse functions as a health care team leader responsible for the safe delivery of patient-centered, goal-oriented care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Professional Nurse also directs and guides patient teaching and activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise.)
    • Experience:
      • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Has a thorough knowledge of nursing principles and procedures.
      • Minimum of 2 years perioperative nursing experience.
      • One year or more med/surg nursing experience preferred.
    • Education and Training:
      • BSN required
      • CNOR required
      • Certification from an accredited RNFA program within 2 years of hire.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing process through his/her understanding,  judgment, and skills.
    • License, Certification & Registration:
      • RN License - Currently licensed as an RN in Massachusetts
      • CPR
      • ACLS within 6 months of hire
    • Other Requirements:
      • Demonstrates continuing education in accordance with State regulations.
      • Assures compliance with unit-specific scope of practice.
      • Must be able to speak the English language in an understandable manner.
      • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so the requirements of the position can be fully met.
      • Call Rotation
      • Occasional weekend or evening shifts based on department needs.
      • Knowledge and application of surgical aseptic technique
      • Ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations
      • Demonstrated knowledge of the nursing process through his/her understanding, judgment, and skills.
      • Current liability insurance.
