As the highest-ranking officer in a police department, the Chief of Police is responsible for overseeing a wide range of duties that are critical to maintaining law and order in the community. 

1. The Chief of Police is managing the administrative functions of the department. This includes managing budgets, grant writing, allocating resources, and overseeing the recruitment, training, and performance of officers. 

2. The Chief of Police is also responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of the department, including patrol operations, investigations, and traffic management. The Chief is responsible for ensuring that officers are properly trained and equipped to carry out their duties, and for providing them with the resources they need to be effective in their jobs.

The Chief of Police job is a multifaceted role that requires a combination of leadership, management, and communication skills. By fulfilling these duties, the Chief plays a critical role in promoting public safety and ensuring that law and order are maintained in the community.

Must have the ability to multitask and also serve as Emergency Management Director. LTC application processing and good communication skills is also required. 

This position works under the direction of the Clarksburg Selectboard.  

A. Educational Requirements

  • Minimum Degree Level: The minimum educational requirement for a Chief of Police position is associates or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or a related field. 

B. Training Requirements

  • Police Academy Training: Certification from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Basic Recruit Officer Academy or eligible for permanent expemption by the MPTC.

  • Must be certified by Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) or meet requirments to be certified by the Massachusetts POST Commisson.
