Williams College is seeking a Sculpture Studio Technician to join the Art Department to provide support to the sculpture and interdisciplinary studio courses taught in the studio wing of the department. Reporting to the Director of Studio Operations, this position works directly with faculty, students, and other staff as they support the sculptural and three-dimensional needs of the Art Department.

The successful candidate is a well-rounded individual with a wide range of skills in three-dimensional media. They will work independently and collaboratively with Art Department faculty to provide operational support for the safe and efficient functioning of the sculpture shop and other classrooms as needed. This includes managing inventory and procurement, ensuring safety compliance, overseeing studio maintenance and infrastructure projects, working with relevant offices, and performing other projects or duties as needed. The position provides safety training and access for students and faculty in their coursework and contributes across disciplines. This position uses metal fabrication and wood shop machinery.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and/or between 2 years of experience, and documented technical skills are required.
  • Experience in metal fabrication, woodworking, and moldmaking, including tools and equipment such as a MIG welder, oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, stationary sanders, grinders, metal saws, table saw, bandsaw, and an electric ceramic kiln.
  • Experience in setting up and overseeing the safe operation and maintenance of sculpture shop equipment.


Additional Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of materials, fabrication, and operation of sculpture shop equipment, with a commitment to environmental health and proper shop safety practices.
  • Ability to instruct and support students in utilizing studio resources across the art department for various assignments and projects
  • Manage teaching assistants' duties in collaboration with department faculty.
  • Manage several budgets: this job requires ordering materials for the sculpture and tutorial art classes, as well as ordering materials for individual art students.
  • Interest in developing, studying, selecting, modifying, and adopting instructional technology and materials, and training faculty and students in their use.
  • Interest in the learning, development, and adoption of best practices for new materials or technologies.
  • Ability to work well with other faculty and students on collaborative projects, and evidence of engaging, educating, and mentoring a diverse group of students.
  • Interest in contributing to special projects or assisting with department events.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain professionalism and flexibility in a college environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with staff, faculty, and students.


Physical Requirements of the Position:
  • Must possess the ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength, and coordination.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. The position also requires mobility to operate large, industrial shop machinery and climb step stools and ladders.


The Sculpture Studio Technician is a 35-hour per week, 10-month academic year position. Pay range is from $30.00 - $33.00, commensurate with experience. To prepare for the beginning of the fall academic semester, the anticipated start date for this position is mid-August. This position requires fully in-person work. Remote work arrangements will not be available at this time.
