Assistant Professor of Coastal and Ocean Policy
Williams College: Williams-Mystic

Open Date: Dec 15, 2024
Deadline: Feb 03, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
The Williams-Mystic Coastal and Ocean Studies Program (mystic.williams.edu), located in Mystic, CT, invites applications for a full-time assistant professor of Coastal and Ocean Policy. Williams-Mystic is a selective off-campus program of Williams College located on the coastal campus at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, CT, our partner institution. We are a tight-knit and highly collaborative interdisciplinary program centered on outstanding undergraduate teaching that combines hands-on and place-based experiential learning, independent student research, and close faculty-student engagement. Students of all majors study history, literature, policy, and science to cultivate a transdisciplinary understanding of issues facing our coasts and oceans, focusing on climate change, environmental justice, and sustainability. The policy professor runs the required Coastal and Ocean Policy course, and collaboratively works with faculty from four other academic disciplines: maritime history, literature of the sea, marine ecology, and oceanographic processes to teach interdisciplinary classes and facilitate multi-day interdisciplinary field seminars on our nation's coasts about issues and topics related to the coasts and ocean.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a coastal and ocean policy expert, practitioner, and educator with experience and interest in interdisciplinary pedagogy. The course examines contemporary policy and legal challenges facing our oceans and coasts, integrating underlying legal frameworks to address current and emerging coastal and ocean policy issues. The ability to engage with local, regional, and national stakeholders regarding complex issues and possibilities for resolution is especially valuable. Course topics often include climate change, climate justice, coastal and ocean pollution, coastal zone management, fisheries regulation, marine biodiversity and conservation, offshore energy development, international shipping, and relevant federal constitutional and administrative law issues. Legal doctrines often integrated into these policy discussions include allocations of decision-making authority, the competing and complementary exercises of power across branches of government, protection of individual rights in the face of governmental power, and fundamental notions of justice, including environmental justice. Expertise in all these areas is not required, but a willingness to learn is needed. The qualified candidate will teach students how to deconstruct complex issues into discrete components, define the distinct and integrated issues for resolution, and identify the processes for effectively building consensus to effectuate proposed resolutions.

In addition to teaching, the incumbent will be asked (1) to mentor students on independent research that examines current U.S. ocean or coastal policy issues, (2) to integrate opportunities to engage students with coastal stakeholders on real-world problem analysis and resolution, and (3) to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to design, coordinate, and help lead two multi-day field seminars each semester-a total of four field seminars per year. Field seminar locations have included excursions to the Pacific, Atlantic, and/or the Gulf of Mexico coastlines. The incumbent must be able to work as an equal member of a close-knit team that can complete a wide breadth of independent tasks beyond traditional academic responsibilities (e.g. travel logistics, building and maintaining stakeholder relationships, fostering community, transporting students, and other duties).

Application Instructions
Applicants should have a JD, PhD, or a Masters with 10 years experience in a related field, or foreign equivalent, by the start date of the appointment. The position will start on July 1, 2025.
