Assistant Director Of Alumni Engagement, Classes Of 2015-2028
JR10000000400 Williams College Main Campus
Alumni of Williams College are known for their energy, enthusiasm, and their desire to share their purple passion with the world. As Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, working with the Classes of 2015-2028 (Class Manager), you will be responsible for harnessing that energy and channeling it into holistic engagement strategy, including events, communication, philanthropy, and volunteer service. Within this particular cohort of classes, you will help a base of highly dedicated volunteers and donors expand the scope of their engagement and philanthropic impact.
Generations of giving through the Alumni Fund has enabled Williams to intensify its efforts to bring to campus the best students from around the world based on who they might become, not how much they can afford to pay, and to support every aspect of their experience once on campus. More recently, this commitment has led to a transformation of the student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas.
The Class Manager is part of a dynamic Office of Alumni Engagement: a team of creative, empathetic, and committed individuals who are dedicated to keeping alumni connected to each other and the college by uplifting and empowering all members of our diverse community. We are looking for someone with a can-do spirit who will thrive while working as part of a highly functioning team.
Responsibilities
As Class Manager, you provide direct management and holistic support of engagement and philanthropy efforts among a cohort of assigned classes (undergraduates through ten years post graduation, including current seniors). This work forms the core of the Class Engagement team within the Office of Alumni Engagement.
- Alumni Engagement. Promotes opportunities for lifelong alumni engagement with the college, including event attendance, communications, volunteerism, and giving.
- Volunteer management. Identify, recruit, onboard, retain, motivate, and manage the work of the class leadership team in each assigned class (typical 1-2 class presidents, VP's, secretaries, treasurers; 2-4 head agents, 2+ leadership giving agents, 25-30 associate agents). Inspire continued engagement through cultivation and stewardship visits (in-person or virtual), including of agents and also other class leaders as needed.
- Senior class gift. Recruit, onboard, lead, support, and coach a broadly representative cohort of volunteers from the senior class. Facilitate education and solicitation events and outreach from the volunteers to their classmates.
By fulfilling the above responsibilities and pursuing additional strategies that emerge, increase engagement rates for classes in the first ten years after graduation and inspire ~5,000 young alumni to come together and raise approximately $150,000 each year while working to increase donor retention among first-time donors and reduce churn of sporadic donors.
Holistic leader on student and young alumni; Partners closely with Affinity Program Manager and Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in promoting opportunities for lifelong engagement to
- EC/VC Young Alumni Subcommittee. Partner deeply with the director of class engagement and the Alumni Fund to lead the Young Alumni Subcommittee with members of the Vice-Chairs and SoA Executive Committee. Our youngest classes are our most diverse with the need to focus on participation among those classes in order to diversify engagement and the donor pool long term.
- Student engagement program. Develop a programmatic vision and identify opportunities for campus partnerships in creating a successful 4-year student engagement and philanthropy program that promotes all aspects of Williams's mission; an in-depth understanding of the financial operations of Williams and the importance of philanthropic support; an understanding of the importance of the role of alumni in extending Williams's legacy; and an understanding of the role philanthropy plays in service, a hallmark of Williams's core values.
By fulfilling the above responsibilities and pursuing additional strategies that emerge, position current students for deep involvement as alumni along all four factors of engagement (event attendance, communications, volunteerism, and giving), including diversifying the donor pool so that it reflects the alumni body as a whole, and continues to adapt as the alumni body becomes more diverse.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree preferred plus a minimum of two years of professional experience (preferably in higher or secondary education) or other directly related experience, including communications/marketing, fundraising, or working with students and/or volunteers
- Ability to navigate complex, sophisticated conversations that range from small talk to explaining our complex financial model and personal motivations for giving
- Demonstrated interest in working with volunteers and ability to cultivate relationships with volunteer leaders, students, and donors.
- Ability to analyze data quantitatively and qualitatively; strong understanding of most aspects of fundraising principles, practices, techniques, and philosophy in higher education preferred
- A strong desire to learn the unique characteristics and culture of Williams College and appreciate the passion and expectations of its alumni; moderate amount of travel, evening, and weekend responsibilities are required to meet with alumni.

Applicants are encouraged to state in their cover letter what particular skills, strengths, and work or life experiences they will bring to the position and the college, and to reflect on their experience with and commitment to supporting diverse, inclusive, and equitable communities.
