Williams College is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time Science Center Shop Engineer. This position provides essential technical support to the science departments through the design and fabrication of scientific equipment for both research and instructional labs. The Science Center Shop Engineer contributes input and expertise at all phases of the laboratory design and implementation process, from initial conception to installation. This position uses CAD and CAM software to design and machine parts using both advanced CNC, 3D printing, and traditional machining equipment. Other duties include maintenance of shop equipment and inventory, routine repair of laboratory equipment, and student training. Qualifications:

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Qualifications include:

  • Experience in use of CAD software to design parts
  • Experience in use of CAM software to program CNC machines (CNC multi-axis mill and CNC lathe)
  • Experience in setup, safe operation and maintenance of CNC machines
  • Experience in the use of traditional machining and shop tools such as mill, lathe, saws, welding


This position requires independent work and the ability to manage priorities and deadlines for multiple projects. The ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others is essential, including other Science Center and departmental staff, faculty members, students and outside vendors. This position involves routine heavy lifting of 50+ pounds with team- and mechanical-assist equipment. It also requires mobility to operate large, industrial shop machinery and climb step stools/ladders.

Application review will begin on November 18, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. Pay range is from $62,000-$72,000, commensurate with experience. Job band 7. This position requires fully in-person work. Remote work arrangements will not be available at this time. All applications will be reviewed by the search committee.
