Description:

The Building Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of City Hall and other assigned City buildings/locations. This position ensures that all public and employee areas are clean, well-organized, and properly maintained, contributing to a welcoming and professional environment for residents, visitors, and staff. Job duties also include maintenance of City Hall grounds, walks, lawns & shrubbery.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Empty wastebaskets, recycle bins, and other disposal units in a timely manner.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, ensuring that they are stocked with necessary supplies (soap, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.); replacing deodorizers. 
  • Clean and maintain employee breakroom and other leisure spaces used by staff. 
  • Sanitizing door handles, high-touch surface areas, bathrooms, etc. 
  • Sweep, mop, scrub and wax floors and stairs; Wash windows, walls and window blinds.
  • Dust woodwork, shelves, office furniture and other equipment. 
  • Performs routine maintenance such as changing light bulbs, minor repairs, and reporting larger maintenance issues to the supervisor. 
  • Ensure that building doors are locked after business hours and maintain a safe environment by reporting hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings, events, and functions held at City Hall.
  • Assist in seasonal tasks, including light snow shoveling around building entrances, de-icing walkways, cutting lawns and trimming bushes, and keeping outdoor areas tidy.
  • Monitor and maintain custodial supplies and equipment; report needs for replenishment to Supervisor.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred. 
  • General experience in janitorial and maintenance work is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of modern building cleaning materials, methods, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently.
  • Ability to accept responsibility & work with minimal supervision.
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse population, including employees and building visitors.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent works in various municipal buildings and locations, primary location being City Hall.  While performing the duties of the Custodian, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Exposure to cleaning chemicals and materials. Occasional outdoor work required during inclement weather (e.g., snow removal).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to utilize all equipment, devices, tools used in custodial work. Move throughout the municipal buildings which may include flights of stairs. Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring stability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper mechanics and techniques. May periodically be required to operate a computer to access e-mail. Continuous walking, standing, climbing; frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions.  Must be able to push/pull/lift objects weighing up to 50lbs.

HOURS

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, 2:00PM-10:30PM

SALARY

Starting salary $16.61 - $17.61 per hour

Annual increases up to $22.99 per hour
