Opening Details
Williams Libraries seeks an enthusiastic, user-centered Research and Instruction Librarian to provide instruction and reference services for the sciences. In this entry-level position, the Research and Instruction Librarian will provide guidance to undergraduate students and faculty on research methods and resources, conduct library instruction sessions, and develop library collections in support of curricular and research needs. This is a full-time, year-round appointment, reporting to the Head of Research Services and Library Outreach.
The Research Services department supports the academic mission of the college by providing research assistance, teaching information literacy skills, and developing opportunities for academic engagement with students and faculty. Responsibilities
- As liaison librarian for the sciences:
- Help students develop as scholars by teaching them research skills and connecting them with relevant information resources.
- Teach library instruction sessions aligned with ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Raise awareness of discipline-specific library resources.
- Work with faculty to ensure that library services and collections support their teaching and research activities.
- Partner with Academic Technology Consultants to provide coordinated support to faculty in these departments.
- As a member of the Research Services department:
- Provide general reference and instruction services.
- Staff the Ask A Librarian research help service, online and in person.
- Participate in all departmental programs and initiatives, and work on library and college teams and committees as relevant.
Librarians in Research Services are expected to maintain awareness of trends, tools, and methods in the field of library instruction, information literacy, and related areas. They are also expected to engage with the profession by contributing to national, regional, and/or local associations and professional groups. Williams Libraries provides generous support for continuing professional development.
Qualifications
- Masters in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution required, or ability to obtain within one year. Early career librarians encouraged to apply
- Commitment to information ethics/justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented organization
- Experience or interest in working in a public-facing capacity

- Familiarity with reference work and/or library instruction including information literacy concepts and trends
- Familiarity with research tools and information resources in the sciences
- Subject knowledge in either Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Psychology
- Experience teaching new concepts and/or skills
