Job Title: Custodian 

Reports to: Head Custodian and Superintendent/Principal 

Evaluated by: Head Custodian and Superintendent/Principal 

Summary: Richmond Consolidated School is seeking a highly motivated, hardworking, and energetic individual with an eye for detail who takes initiative and welcomes responsibility. The successful candidate will be responsible for all phases of cleaning and maintenance of the facilities' interior, exterior, and grounds as directed. Duties include but are not limited to daily floor care, dusting, restroom cleaning and sanitation, cleaning of fixtures and furniture, trash removal, window cleaning, painting, snow removal, and other tasks to ensure all facilities are maintained at a high level of cleanliness and readiness. 

Job Environment: School setting including indoor and outdoor school facilities. The position may require going on the roof and traveling to different commercial locations to pick up supplies. 

Performance Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the opening and closing of the facilities 
  • Ensure all exit doors are secured and that all panic door hardware is functioning properly.
  • Check environmental conditions (e.g., heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems) to ensure a comfortable building environment and report any issues 
  • Perform minor repairs and report major repair needs 
  • Perform janitorial work throughout both the interior and exterior facilities 
  • Replenish disposable supplies as needed 
  • Move furniture and equipment as needed for cleaning duties and to assist with daily operations and special events 
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and custodial facilities in good repair 
  • Perform yard work and minor landscaping chores to maintain school grounds
  • Shovel, snow blow, and sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps as needed
  • Assist in emergency situations 
  • Work cooperatively with all school employees 
  • Be friendly and helpful to visitors 
  • Report to work in emergency and unusual circumstances if available 
  • Perform other duties as required 

General Expectations: Work independently with general guidance and maintain cooperative relationships with students and adults. Be able to manage time effectively to meet multiple deadlines. Communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Have the ability to handle last-minute requests and emergencies. Have a collaborative work style in a diverse environment.

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license 
  • Experience in custodial work preferred but not required 
  • Knowledge and experience using custodial cleaning supplies and equipment preferred but not required 
  • Basic knowledge and experience in the repair of custodial cleaning equipment preferred but not required 
  • Knowledge related to electrical, plumbing, heating/HVAC, mechanical, and fire alarm systems preferred but not required 
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions and climates ? Ability to perform custodial duties including standing, walking, sitting, lifting (frequently up to 65 lbs, occasionally over 50 lbs), bending, reaching, and twisting 
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written directions related to custodial assignments Physical Requirements: 
  • Good general health 
  • Alert, physically assertive, and mobile at all times 
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 65 pounds as required 
  • Mobility to regularly walk, stand, stoop, reach, bend, and occasionally run 

Environmental Conditions: 

  • Frequent outdoor work in extreme weather conditions. 
  • Exposure to gasoline, cleaning chemicals, and high noise levels. 
  • Use of foul weather gear, rubber gloves, and steel toe protection when necessary. Terms of Employment: 
  • Twelve-month position $19/hour. 
  • Hours: 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. (may be adjusted depending on weather, school vacation, summer) ? On call 24/7 for snow removal and facility emergencies. 
  • Must have reliable all-weather transportation. 
  • CORI/SORI background check is required
