The position of Maintainer I is responsible for performing general janitorial, custodial and minor repair work in connection with the cleaning and maintenance of a building, or a group of buildings.
1. Cleans offices, rooms, corridors and other spaces in campus buildings by following proper cleaning techniques and procedures in order to assure appropriate cleanliness safety standards. Required duties include the following:
a. Cleans carpets, waxes, polishes and buffs floors; maintains equipment associated with these cleaning functions.
b. Washes windows, woodwork, toilets, lavatories, washrooms and fixtures, appliances, dusts and polishes furniture.
c. Empties and cleans waste barrels, garbage cans and other waste and trash receptacles; transports waste to dumpster and maintains area surrounding dumpster.
d. Sweeps and cleans walks, rakes leaves, shovels snow, picks up trash and generally assists in keeping immediately adjacent outside premises in an orderly condition.
2. Moves furniture and may be required to receive and disburse deliveries by hand or hand-truck to assure appropriate and secure placement and/or storage.
3. Organizes and maintains appropriate supply of cleaning supplies and equipment by conducting regular inventories and submitting requisitions for replacements to the designated supervisor.
4. Locks and unlocks premises and performs other similar security tasks to assure the safety of the building.
5. Makes general repairs of a simple nature using various hand tools to assure a well maintained building; reports other repair problems and needs to the designated supervisor using established procedures.
Job Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:
1. Knowledge of materials, equipment and methods commonly employed in housekeeping and cleaning operations.
2. Ability to operate and care for electric sweepers, mop wringers, brushes and other household cleaning equipment.
3. Ability to make general repairs of a simple nature.
4. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and to follow simple oral and written instructions.
5. Physical ability to withstand the strain of performing manual tasks.
6. Working knowledge of the type, properties, quality and uses of cleaning supplies and equipment and their effect on the various types of construction and finishes; experience in institutional housekeeping and allied equipment.
7. Ability to deal tactfully with others.
8. Successful experience in janitorial and related cleaning fields, preferred.
9. Ability to work a flexible schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB:
1. Knowledge of campus and specific work area(s) assigned to.
2. Increased knowledge of the use of hand tools and janitorial equipment and supplies.
3. Knowledge of campus operations, systems and policies.
4. Increased ability to assess and address maintenance and cleaning problems.
5. Experience working alone and as a member of a team
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, benefited position in the AFSCME bargaining unit. Salary is $41,409.94. Position schedule is Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
