Purpose:
Performs a variety of skilled duties operating equipment involving the construction, repairing, cleaning, and maintaining of Town roads, drainage systems, and the maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Operates safely and efficiently the department heavy and small equipment.
  • Inspects equipment on a daily basis to assure that all controls and safety devices are functioning properly
  • Lubricates and otherwise services equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Participates in ice and snow removal operations which will require work beyond normal work schedule.
  • Performs burials in Cemetery Department
  • Responds to emergencies for sewer problems, storm damage and winter weather issues.
  • Builds, repairs, cleans, and maintains drainage systems and sewer systems.
  • Performs road and property maintenance.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Job Environment:

  • Field work environment is noisy and subject to outdoor and potentially hazardous conditions. 
  • Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, road grader, heavy and light trucks, snowplows, sanders, jackhammers and catch basin cleaners.
  • Contacts are in person, primarily with supervisor and town employees, and consist of an information exchange dialogue, discussing routine and semi-complex issues.
  • Errors could result in personal injury or to other employees, damage to buildings and/or equipment, delay, or loss of service, and monetary loss and/or legal repercussions.

    Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

    Education, Training and Experience:

    High School diploma or equivalent; five years’ experience in road construction and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Special Requirements: 
    Possession of a valid class B CDL driver’s license and a Hoisting License.
    Air Brakes endorsement and all licenses required by Federal or State authorities to operate any motor equipment.

    Knowledge:  Knowledge of all safety requirements and procedures. Working knowledge of the proper use of all motor equipment. Knowledge of principles of construction, and of field operations. Knowledge of sewer configurations and of the operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic equipment.

    Abilities:   Ability to perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance tasks. Ability to successfully carry out detailed oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, state officials and contractors. Ability to operate a motor vehicle, varied equipment, hand and power tools and heavy machinery.

    Skill:  Skilled in the use of all applicable motor equipment. This position requires excellent operations skills, strong organizational skills, and skills in all of the above listed tools and equipment.

    Moderate to heavy physical effort is often required to perform functions which involves occasional lifting more than 100 pounds. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, sit, and hear for extended periods. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, or controls, reaches with hands and arms, crawls, and climbs. Vision and hearing must be at or correctable to normal ranges.
